Great memories. I used to live very close to Kirkby Sheds as a boy. Although officially closed to steam on the date noted, the depot actually continued to service and deploy steam locos until March 14th, 1967 when 3 8Fs were the last to depart. 48142 lingered until June, 1967 in a scrap line of one. The shed continued with diesels (mostly EE T1s) until it finally closed (twice postponed) on November 11th, 1970
ReplyDeleteI was slightly incorrect re 48142..it was there unti the beginning of May, 1967.
ReplyDeleteI do hope that your brilliant site will be updated with this information. Kirkby's last remaining 8Fs were all officially 'directed' to finally leave on 18 / 02 / 1967, but even that did not happen immediately. The last three to leave (on Tuesday, March 14th, 1967 - as previously stated) were: 48279 / 48395 / 48492. Best wishes, Rob Bradford.
