Wolverhampton Works |
Wolverhampton Stafford Road Works was the most modern of all the Great Western locomotive workshops. New erecting |
shops were opened as late as 1932. Prior to this the old works had struggled on in cramped confinement. It was situated |
between the Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton line and split in half by Stafford Road. In order to make maximum use of the |
small amount of land available, three traversers were built into the site. All sorts of standard GW classes went to |
Wolverhampton, but not until later years were 4-6-0s dealt with. The Works closed in February 1964. |
