Days Out No. 25 : 6th September 1959 - Newcastle and Darlington area

A J21 0-6-0, built by Worsdell for the North Eastern Railway, rests in Heaton shed yard on 13th June 1954.

This was an RCTS (Railway, Correspondence and Travel Society) tour of the Newcastle and Darlington area. The party gathered at King's Cross station for the 11.45 pm train to Newcastle. The 13 coaches were hauled by A4 pacific 60015 Quicksilver to Grantham where it was replaced by A3 pacific 60103 Flying Scotsman for the journey northwards. The train arrived at Newcastle at 5.56am and the party transferred to a 35 seat coach for the tour.

The party then travelled south to York on an ex Newcastle express headed by A2 4-6-2 60538 Velocity. They then transferred to a London bound train pulled by 60006 Sir Ralph Wedgwood, departing from York at 6pm, some 25 minutes behind schedule.
