  1. interesting site. As a young train spotter living in Northolt park I recall one day when light engines travelled north coupled in fours..i assumed it must have been the day that Neasden closed.

  2. I was a young 16 year old fireman at 14D in 1960 to 1962. On closure I was transferred to Willesden 1A where I lived in the BR hostel on old oak lane (long gone). It was next door to the fishermans arms pub which is still there . Amongst my favourite locos at Neasden was standard 5 no 73010 which I often fired on marylebone-Woodford Halse parcels traffic. Although I'm well over 70 now I often reflect on those firing days fondly.

    1. Hi Kenneth,
After Neasden closed where were the steam locomotives for Marylebone supplied from? Was it Willesden?
      Regards
      Chris Ardy

  3. Chris, to answer your question, Cricklewood until it closed in late 64, I remember seeing 3 V2's(including 60835 & 60847), and 2 B1's there Easter Saturday 64. Then Willesden took over. But if any heavy repair work was needed, with Willesden's capacity being bigger than Cricklewood, some went to Willesden before the closure of 14A to steam.

    1. Thanks Paul,
I have a photo of 60831 at Cricklewood which I have posted on Facebook.

  4. Encourage Mr. Coxall to write a book detailing ALL his steam memories! What was so wrong with the very handsome L1 2-6-4 tanks? A driver at King's X told me that his L1 was good for 75 and he seemed quite pleased with it. It can't have been merely the small wheels and parallel boiler, surely? It must have been more to do with engineering detail that the Doncaster drawing office would have been responsible for, more than Mr. Thompson.

Mr. Stanier and Mr. Riddles were possibly the most able latter-day designers from the engineering standpoint, so it's not surprising that their units began to take command, even before the the LMR gobbled up the ex-GC.

Some of my relatives and mates lived in Neasden but I only remember once watching a B1 overtake from a (then) Bakerloo line train in the '50s. And soon after the shed closed me and a mate clambered over the coaler and through the coaches on the opposite side of the North Circular Road.
